Lewis County

Lewis County

Lewis County is situated in north central Idaho and was formed from the eastern section of Nez Perce County on March 3, 1911, and named after the explorer Captain Meriwether Lewis.  The Nez Perce Indians were the first to make this area their home.  Most of the county lies in the Nez Perce Reservation, which was opened for homesteading November 18, 1895.

Today Lewis County has a population of just over 3,900 with major industries including Manufacturing and Agriculture.  It is comprised of 479 square miles consisting of the Camas and Nezperce Prairies and a segment of the Clearwater River Basin.  The City of Kamiah is its largest community and the City of Nezperce is the county seat.

Recreation in Lewis County is one of the top reasons people choose to live here.  Scenic lakes, mountains, valleys, prairies cover the gorgeous landscape. Fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, skiing, ice skating, four-wheeling, camping, floating are just some of the great outdoor activities to enjoy in the two county area. The people who live here work hard to play hard and LOVE it!
